The Majorcan shoe industry has focused on the design of high-quality men’s and women’s leather shoes, even though espadrilles, sports shoes and children or orthopaedic footwear are also produced on the island. In addition, a large number of companies have chosen to follow the most cutting-edge fashion trends. Local designers have even developed trendsetting models that have become very popular worldwide.
The permanent exhibition of the Museum features a wonderful collection of 20th-century shoes by different Majorcan companies. Even though shoes capture each producer’s particular way of understanding footwear, the collection as a whole reveals a common bond: shoes are conceived as a thoughtfully designed high-quality item despite the implementation of industrial machinery in the production process.
Many of the factories mentioned in this section are no longer operating. However, there is a strong group of footwear companies that are still very active today and that produce great shoes, renowned both nationally and internationally: Lottusse, Miquel, Bestard, Comes, Camper, TLB, Carmina or Vidal – some of their shoes are exhibited in the display cabinet “Calçat avui” (which literally translates to “Footwear of today”).
